Project Summary: The goals of the Calkins Park Native Tree Planting Project are to increase urban forest canopy, restore wetlands, remove invasive plants, and educate the New London community about native plants. Our vision is to plant a variety of native tree species in strategic locations around Calkins park. The new tree plantings serve a dual function to both the community and the environment. New plantings will serve visitors and the neighboring community with increased shade, air quality, and park aesthetics. Additionally, the use of native trees provides an opportunity for education about the benefits of trees as well as how and why each species thrives in their specific location. Just as importantly, the project will also help in preserving the quality of environmentally significant land through the removal of invasive species, increased natural habitats, and reduced stormwater runoff. The goal of the project extends even beyond a better park — it serves as a way to excite the community about their local environment and native plants.
